CERTs 2009: Harnessing Resources & Teamwork for Minnesota’s Energy Future

The Third Clean Energy Resource Teams Conference
will be held in St. Cloud on February 10-11, 2009!

CERTs 2009: Harnessing Resources & Teamwork for Minnesota’s Energy Future will bring together over 500 Minnesotans who are blazing the paths to a clean energy future by working on energy efficiency and clean energy projects in their communities, thus accelerating our learning process together.

This conference could not come at a more important time. Our economy is hurting, energy prices are on the rise, and the impacts of global warming are becoming increasingly clear. Minnesotans of all stripes want to know what they can do. It just so happens that many of the solutions to our global climate crisis are also the ones that are going to help our economy and our communities thrive.

You can be a part of Minnesota’s clean energy future, and you can get energy efficiency and clean energy projects on the ground in your community! Whether you’re a farmer, utility representative, school staff, local official, student, business owner—or member of any community—there is a role for you to play. Learn what people are doing across the state, connect, and share resources.

This year’s event will start with optional In-Depth Workshops and an Evening Reception on February 10th followed by the Daylong Conference on the 11th. Wind, solar, biogas, efficient cooling, heating and lighting, and fuel-efficient cars will be discussed. We will hear from successful CERTs-supported projects, trailblazing green cities and schools, and we will learn the latest about green jobs, green manufacturing, and green investment & financing in Minnesota. Networking sessions will allow like-minded attendees to learn from one another, and a conference documentary and online discussion forum will allow us to harness our collective resources and share them beyond the event.

Register! Earlybird registration is now open! Click here for more details and to register now. Learn more! Check out our agenda to see the workshops and sessions that will be offered.

Energy Use Decline

National news is reporting that electricity usage is declining at a rate faster than can be explained by the current economic situation. For example EXCEL energy says that residential use declined 3% for the period August thru September.

Rochester Public Utilities says that the 2008 usage is 2% down, and Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Association says systemwide use declined 0.7%. Thanks to Larry Kosher at RPU and Dan Hayes From SMMPA for the local info.

The Pending Resource Crisis: Understanding Our Biophysical and Biological Constraints to Sustainability

Nate Hagens, Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, will be speaking on human nuerobiology and sustainability oriented behavior, within the context of resource depletion.

What: Nate Hagens "The Pending Resource Crisis: Understanding Our Biophysical and Biological Constraints to Sustainability"
When: December 3rd, 1:30 to 3:00
Where: 335 Borlaug Hall, U of M St. Paul campus

Hagens posits that by acknowledging and understanding both our biophysical (resource depletion) and biological (cognitive barriers, habituation, and belief systems) constraints we will be better able to choose cultural opportunities for sustainability. He draws upon and synthesizes recent research in cognitive neuroscience, neuroeconomics, and evolutionary biology and their applications to sustainability oriented behaviors in addressing energy and environmental limits. Ultimately Hagens looks for those solutions that aligned us with not only what we have, but who we are. Discussion will follow.

Prior to coming to the Gund Institute, Nate developed trading algorithms for commodity systems and was President of Sanctuary Asset Management, Managing Director of Pension Research Institute, and Vice President at the investment firms Salomon Brothers and Lehman Brothers. Nate is an editor of The Oil Drum, an online global think tank devoted to energy and sustainability.
